Hash Generator

Create a SHA hash from text in your browser.

Runs in your browserFree

SHA-1 is for legacy compatibility only. Do not use a plain SHA hash for password storage.

Up to 1 million characters. Text is hashed as UTF-8.

No result yet.

How to use

  1. Type or paste text into the input.
  2. Select a hash algorithm. SHA-256 is selected by default.
  3. Choose Generate hash or press Ctrl+Enter (or Command+Enter on macOS).
  4. Choose Copy result to copy the digest, or Clear to remove the input and result.

About this hash generator

This tool converts your text to UTF-8 and calculates a SHA digest with the browser’s Web Crypto API. The result is displayed as lowercase hexadecimal. SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 are members of the SHA-2 family and are suitable for general integrity checks. SHA-1 is available only for legacy compatibility.

Cryptographic hashes are one-way, but a plain SHA hash is not a suitable way to store passwords. For password storage, use a dedicated, deliberately slow password-hashing algorithm such as Argon2id, scrypt, bcrypt, or PBKDF2 with a unique salt.

Privacy

Hashing happens entirely in your browser. Your input is not uploaded or saved by ToolsLodge.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded or stored?

No. Hashes are calculated in your browser with the Web Crypto API. ToolsLodge does not upload or save your input.

Which hash algorithms can I use?

Choose SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512. SHA-1 is included for compatibility only and is not recommended where collision resistance matters.

Can I use this to hash passwords for storage?

No. General-purpose SHA hashes are too fast for secure password storage. Use a password-hashing algorithm such as Argon2id, scrypt, bcrypt, or PBKDF2 with a unique salt.

Does changing one character change the hash?

Yes. A small input change produces a different digest. Hashes are one-way and cannot be decoded back into the original text.
