About this word and character counter

The live word counter uses Unicode-aware word boundaries, so punctuation is not counted as a word and text from many languages can be segmented correctly. Character totals count grapheme clusters—the characters a reader typically perceives—rather than the underlying UTF-16 code units. The “no spaces” total excludes all whitespace, including tabs and line breaks.

Sentences are counted using the browser’s sentence segmentation. Paragraphs are non-empty blocks separated by blank lines. Reading time is an estimate based on 200 words per minute; it is less than a minute for any non-empty text below that threshold.

How are words counted?

The counter uses your browser's Unicode-aware word segmentation, so punctuation is not counted as a word and words in many writing systems are handled appropriately.

How are characters counted?

Characters count visible Unicode grapheme clusters, including spaces in the first total. The second total excludes whitespace, including spaces, tabs, and line breaks.

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time uses an average pace of 200 words per minute. It is an estimate, and actual reading speed varies.
