About URL component encoding

This tool uses the browser’s encodeURIComponent and decodeURIComponent behavior. It is intended for individual URL components such as a search query or parameter value—not for an entire URL, whose delimiters (:, /, ?, &, and #) have structural meaning. For form-encoded data, spaces may instead be represented by +.

Malformed percent escapes or encoded bytes that are not valid UTF-8 cannot be decoded and produce a clear error. Encoding and decoding do not make a URL safe to trust or protect sensitive information.

Frequently asked questions

Is my input uploaded or stored?

No. Encoding and decoding happen locally in your browser. ToolsLodge does not upload or save your input.

What does this tool encode?

It encodes or decodes a URL component, such as a query parameter value. It does not encode or parse a complete URL with its separators.

How are spaces encoded?

URL component encoding represents a space as %20. Form encoding sometimes uses a plus sign for spaces, which is a different convention.

Does it support Unicode?

Yes. Unicode text is encoded as UTF-8 bytes and represented with percent escapes. Decoding returns the original Unicode text when the encoded bytes form valid UTF-8.
